SKYWARN
SKYWARN is a concept developed in the late 1960s that was intended to
promote a cooperative effort between the National Weather Service and
communities. The emphasis of the effort is often focused on the storm
spotter, an individual who takes a position near their community and
reports wind gusts, hail size, rainfall, and cloud formations that could
signal a developing tornado.
SKYWARN is a voluntary program developed by the National Weather Service
(NWS) to improve the warning program. Storm Spotter volunteers serve as
severe weather spotters for the NWS and local emergency management
programs, and generally have two things in common - an interest in the
weather and an interest in serving their community.
SKYWARN storm spotters are part of the ranks of citizens who form the
Nation’s first line of defense against severe weather. There can be no
finer reward than to know that their efforts have given communities the
precious gift of time–seconds and minutes that can help save lives.
If you are interested in becoming a SKYWARN Storm Spotter please join us
at the US Coast Guard MSO located at 2901 Turtle Creek Dr, Port Arthur
Texas 77642 on: Thursday February 5th from 6:30PM to 8:30PM.
The class will be put on by Roger Erickson from the Lake Charles
National Weather Service.
